CHENNAI: People of the State can expect some respite from the searing heat for the next couple of days with the weather department forecasting that the maximum temperature will remain below 40 degree Celsius.

Officials say the temperature will be moderated by the westerly winds from Andhra Pradesh where also the temperature has come down recently.

“The temperature has reduced from the peak level witnessed some days ago. As per our forecast, mercury levels are likely to be not more than 40 degree Celsius,” an official said.

There are chances of rain in the interior regions of the State, especially those which border the western ghats. Salem, Namakkal and Dharmapuri are likely to receive rain in the next few days. “There will be isolated instances of rain in this region.

However,  the quantity of rain cannot be forecast,” the official said. As far as Chennai is concerned, no rain is expected in the coming days. However, temperatures will not trouble the residents as sea breeze is likely to set in providing the much-needed relief. On Sunday, the city recorded 38.2 degree Celsius, which was only a degree above the normal May temperature.
