CHENNAI: Users of Chennai Outer Ring Road, which connects northern Chennai with southern Chennai, will soon have to pay toll as Tamil Nadu Road Development Company has been accorded permission to set up toll plazas on the stretch.

The first phase of 29.65 km Outer Ring Road from Vandalur on National Highway-45 to Nemilichery on National Highway -205 via Nazarthpet is already operational and plans are on to install two toll plazas in the stretch.

The first toll will be located at Varadarajapuram (6km) for the section of road from Vandalur to Nazarthpet (19.65km) and the second will be at Kolappancheri Village (21.8km) at the stretch which ends in Nemilichery (29.65km).

Similarly, once the entire stretch is completed, which is likely by next year end, two more toll plazas will be set up beyond Nemilichery. The third toll plaza will be set up at Palavedu village (30.85km) for the section of road from Nemilichery to Padiyanallur (47.90km) and the last toll plaza will be set up at Chinnamullaivoyal Village (56.70km) for the section of road from Padiyanallur to Minjur (60.15km).

The toll plazas will be developed by Tamil Nadu Road Development Company, who will also collect the user fee for Chennai Outer Ring Road. It is learnt that the government will create a corpus fund so that it can be utilised for new projects.

The first and second phase of Outer Ring Road Project got administrative sanction in 1995 and 1998 and the land was acquired by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.
