CHENNAI: Rajinikanth’s tweet condemning the assault on a police constable during Tuesday’s protests ended up as a backlash as many strongly condemned and severely criticised his tweet in various social media platforms since Wednesday morning. Some of the cadre of Nam Tamilar Katchi allegedly attacked police personnel during the protests against holding the IPL match in Chennai and to urge the Centre to constitute the Cauvery Management Board.

Following this, actor Rajinikanth tweeted that the assault was the height of violence. It would turn out to be a big threat to the country if they were not controlled in the initial stages. He called for more stringent laws to punish those who indulged in such crimes. After seeing his tweet, many expressed their views in social media. Most of them strongly criticised his views, raising questions about police atrocities on public.

Tharasu Shyam, a journalist, told Express that, “It is a biased statement. He posted only one video in which police personnel were attacked. So many videos are there about police attack on Tuesday. The police personnel in uniform brutally attacked women during anti-Tasmac and pro-Jallikattu agitations.”
Many echoed the same view in social media. Rajinikanth’s fans had a tough time countering the comments against the actor who is aspiring to enter politics.
