CHENNAI: Bosses are generally known to fire workers for mistakes. However, when 34-year-old Yamuna Anand made mistakes while typing out a diagnostic report, her boss allegedly splashed her with surgical spirit and set her on fire at Vanuvampet near Madipakkam here on Sunday. According to the police, Yamuna and her boss Raja (40), owner of Sri Balaji Diagnostics, had a verbal altercation before Raja set her on fire around 2.30 pm.

“Yamuna was bad-mouthing him after he found mistakes in diagnostic reports. That seems to have sparked the incident,” said Madipakkam police inspector B Jayasankar. He denied reports that Raja set Yamuna on fire since she refused to grant sexual favours. “We have booked the accused under section 307 of the IPC (attempt to murder) and have remanded him,” he said.

Yamuna, who sustained 46 per cent burns in the face, chest and hands, is being treated at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where she was admitted on Sunday. Doctors said her condition was critical and it was too early to say whether she would recover. “Though she is conscious and able to talk, it will take 72 hours to be sure if she will make a complete recovery,” said a senior doctor at the hospital.
