Coast Guard rescues injured Ukranian man mid-sea

A 49-year-old Ukranian national, who suffered severe injuries while travelling in a vessel, was rescued by the Indian Coast Guard on Saturday.

CHENNAI: A 49-year-old Ukranian national, who suffered severe injuries while travelling in a vessel, was rescued by the Indian Coast Guard on Saturday.

According to a press statement, the Ukranian national crew, who was on a passage in MV 'Ornella' vessel from Chittagong, Bangladesh to Penang, Malaysia, suffered injury after he fell from the staircase of vessel.

Informed by the master of the vessel, Coast Guard of Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Port Blair advised her to head towards Port Blair for medical evacuation.

Immediately, medical advice was made available to the master to administer basic first aid and assess the condition of the injured crew.

Accordingly, the Indian Coast Guard C-146 sailed from Port Blair with medical team to effect rendezvous with the vessel off Port Blair.

The medical team undertook basic medical assessment and brought the injured crew to Coast Guard jetty, Port Blair, at 12.30 am on Sunday.

The injured was, thereafter, handed over to the agent of the vessel for further medical management.

It is learnt that the injured has been admitted to GB Pant Hospital and his condition is stable.

The Indian Coast Guard has successfully coordinated five medical evacuations and rescued 20 lives at sea since Jan 2018, added the statement.
