Couple dies as car rams tree after tyre burst in Chennai

The couple along with their younger son-in-law, Raman (37), was on the way to attend a family function in Maduranthakam in Chengalpattu.

CHENNAI: An elderly couple died on the spot and their son-in-law injured after the car in which they were travelling veered off the road and crashed into a tree following a tyre burst near Uthiramerur on Tuesday evening.

The deceased have been identified as Varadhan (85), a farmer, and his wife Govindammal (69), a homemaker, residing in Podavur village in Kancheepuram district. The couple along with their younger son-in-law, Raman (37), was on the way to attend a family function in Maduranthakam in Chengalpattu.

The police said as they were nearing Thiruppulivanam village, the driver lost control of the car after the front left tyre burst suddenly, causing the vehicle, driven by Raman, to veer off the road and crash into a roadside palm tree.

The Uthiramerur police admitted Raman to Uthiramerur GH. The bodies of the couple were sent to Chengalpattu GH for postmortem.
