NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has announced a major road and drainage upgrade for Burari, with an integrated Rs 125 crore plan covering road improvement and drainage works.
Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh inspected Burari Road and adjoining drainage works on Sunday and reviewed the proposed improvement plan with senior PWD officers.
Under the plan, the entire 7.1-km stretch of Burari Road will be improved. The continuous corridor will run from Outer Ring Road through Baba Colony and Nathupura up to Hiranki. The Outer Ring Road-Baba Colony and Nathupura-Hiranki sections will be developed as bituminous roads, forming part of the 3.2-km bituminous stretch. The 3.9-km Baba Colony-Nathupura section will be developed as an Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) road and is estimated to cost Rs 39 crore. The Nathupura-Hiranki section is estimated to cost Rs 9 crore. A central verge will also be constructed along the entire 7.1-km stretch as part of the comprehensive road improvement plan.
Alongside the road work, a 9.3-km comprehensive drainage network, estimated to cost Rs 75 crore, will be developed to improve storm-water drainage and address waterlogging concerns in the area.
The drainage works will cover the Amrit Vihar-Bengali Colony stretch, where drains will be constructed on both sides of the road, as well as the Swaroop Nagar More-Burari Creek stretch, where drainage infrastructure will be improved.
The drainage work has already been tendered, while the road work is expected to be tendered within the next 10 days, according to the government.
“The objective is not to improve isolated portions of the road, but to upgrade the entire Burari corridor in an integrated manner,” Singh said. He added that the road from Outer Ring Road through Baba Colony and Nathupura up to Hiranki would be improved according to the requirements of each stretch, while drainage infrastructure would be strengthened simultaneously.
The minister directed PWD officers to ensure close coordination, timely execution and strict quality control throughout the project. He also instructed officials to ensure that the road and drainage works are properly coordinated so residents do not face repeated disruption during the execution of the project.
“Every stretch must be executed with proper planning and quality. The road and drainage works should be coordinated so that residents do not face repeated disruption and the infrastructure delivers a durable solution for Burari,” Singh said. Until the road reconstruction work begins, regular water sprinkling will be undertaken along the affected stretches to control dust and provide relief to commuters and local residents.
