HYDERABAD: Though endoscopic surgery has been around for some time, the operative procedure seems to have been slow on the uptake. Commonly known as ‘keyhole surgery’, the operation involves a small incision on the skin through which the surgical and visual instruments are inserted and operated externally. In an announcement made on Wednesday, a group of endoscopy surgeons specialising in Gynaecology said that the medical fraternity need to pay more attention to possibilities in keyhole surgery in the area of surgeries related specifically to women.

The team of medicos from the Indian Association of Gynaecological Endoscopists (IAGE) announced that in order to better inform the medical community of the scope in research and practice of the procedure, a three-day seminar and talk would be held in the city, beginning Friday. With registrations in excess of 500, the organising secretary of the IAGE, Dr S Shantha Kumari said that live demonstrations would feature as a prominent part of the proceedings.

“Streamed live from the hospital, the video feed would be broadcast to the assembled medicos for discussion and study,” she said.

“A live case study of this sort would be a good opportunity for doctors in the area to hone their skills,” noted Dr T Vindhya, who was present at the meet. “Women’s health has been a recurrent concern for the medical community, since the problems often get overlooked due to negligence of lack of awareness within the family, regarding the health issues concerned,” added Shantha Kumari. She further noted that though medical facilities in the State have been made more accessible through Governmental schemes, “a lot more needs to be done, especially for the socially vulnerable section of society, a majority of whom are women,” Kumari remarked.

The theme for the conventional and seminar, informed the organising committee would be ‘Controversies in Gynaecological Endoscopy’, a topic “that has been specifically chosen to dispel misconceptions on the issue, enabling medical professionals to acquire greater clarity on the subject,” Scientific Committee member Dr Y Savitha Devi said.

The scope of endoscopic surgery needs to be disseminated among a wider audience, since the process enables faster recovery times for patients, while minimising scarring and straining in the patients’ pockets, noted the doctors at the meet. They added, saying that the procedure would “be especially effective in treating uterine deformities, along with treating conditions such as cervical cancer.
