Several reasons were cited for the poor turnout. No holiday was declared at Central Government offices/organisations. As a result, over a lakh of voters did turn up exercise their franchise.

On the other hand, a holiday was given to multi-national companies where a majority of the employees are non-locals.

Monday being an auspicious day, several marraiges were solemnised in different parts of Greater Hyderabad. This too affected the attendance at polling booths. The percentage of voting for the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) elections held in Febraury 2002 was 43.47 per cent.
