HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Literary Festival 2010, a three-day event which began on Friday, saw the participation of many eminent people from literary circles.

Stressing on the need of a large number of translators for translating local literature into English, former Governor of Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka,VS Rama Devi said that, “There is an ever increasing need of translators in our country who are well versed in both the regional language as well as English, to increase the reach of the literature available in regional languages across the country.”

Speaking at the inaugural session of the three-day Hyderabad Literary Festival 2010 organised by Muse India, the literary e-journal and Osmania University Centre for International Programmes (OUCIP) she further said that apart from literature, there is a huge demand for translations of books, central acts and government documents as well.

Also the requirement to translate into English is triggered by the fact that students and youngsters do not want to read literature in the regional languages these days she pointed out.

“Translation activity will come to a close if we keep on generalising translation to be work by work translation as it is not possible. A translator may have to negotiate many times to be able to bring out a piece in English.”

“In the process, it is also natural that sometimes, the background, environment and the job of the translator will have influences on the translated piece as well. Nevertheless it is absolutely essential to bridge the gap between regional literature and its readers,” she added.

Meanwhile, over 80 writers from across the country representing over a dozen major Indian Languages and English will read from their work and share their insights into the creative process during the three-day event.

A panel discussion on the theme of the festival, ‘Celebrating Creativity’ with panelists from different creative fields, a cultural evening at Taramati Baradari and a workshop on Haiku are some of the highlights of the first edition of the Hyderabad Literary Fest (HLF).
