HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation demolished as many as 2,896 encroachments on Wednesday, that have come up on road margins. The demolition drive will be continued up to July 30.

The civic body took the decision after the AP High Court, Lok Ayukta and Human Rights Commission expressed displeasure about the traffic situation in the city and directed the GHMC to take necessary steps to remove encroachments.

Encroachments made on various roads have been causing inconvenience to vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement and thereby leading to frequent accidents.

It is felt there is an immediate need to take up encroachment removal on war-footing basis.

Demolitions made on Wednesday include 309 in circle-1, 72 in circle-2, 294 in circle-3, 139 in circle-4, 65 in circle-5, 103 in circle-6, 102 in circle-8, 167 in circle-9, 164 in circle-10, 85 in circle- 11, 557 in circle-12, 30 in circle-13, 396 in circle-14, 141 in circle-15, 60 in circle-16, 78 in circle-17 and 134 encroachments in circle-18.
