while the breed of obsessive pet lovers is growing rapidly around the country, and there are enough spas and gourmet food sevices to cater to your pampered four-legged furball, there is still plenty of room for niche pet services that help with unforseen pet emergencies. Enter Ishmeet Chandiok, who is aiming to make that big difference around town.
Having started a dog food company, Harley’s Corner, which dishes up nutritious and tasty pet food, Chandiok decided to go a step further. He set up Pets Are People Too (PAPT), a non-profit emergency service that is all about making sure that animals are treated right and that they have a lawyer too. PAPT was partly inspired by Chandiok’s own dog, Harley, who had an emergency at three in the morning when he started choking. Luckily, Chandiok managed to get through to his veterinarian and all was well.
Hotline specialist
But Chandiok realised that things could have ended very differently had he not been able to get professional help on time.
“I would have had no idea what to do, and I don’t want other pet owners to ever be in that situation,” he explains. The service is currently available via e-mail or on the website, but Chandiok promises that the response time is very quick. PAPT also has an online forum which enables owners to discuss animal nutrition, general health issues, and where Chandiok says “users will be able to instantly find all the information they need in one place.” PAPT also offers the chance to seek a second opinion from an experienced veterinarian. He states that some of the existing sites can be frustratingly slow, and are not user friendly as “you have to scroll through a lot of advertisements. With my site, users will be able to easily find all the information they need”. This dog-lover is also adamant that he does not want to profit from the initiative. “I don’t want to commercialise it, I have my pet food business for that. This is just something I do to try and improve the treatment of animals in general,” he says.
