Liquor syndicate scam: More excise staff in dock

Express News Service

In the second round of action against excise officers, allegedly involved in the liquor syndicate scam, the state government issued orders on Tuesday initiating departmental inquiry against more than 20 officers.

The politico-bureaucrat nexus in liquor business rocked the state early last year, giving jitters to some top leaders of the ruling party.

Following many complaints that bureaucrats and politicians are involved in protecting liquor syndicates, which made huge profits by inflating the price of liquor, the state government ordered a probe in into the scandal.

The ACB, after completing investigation, recommended disciplinary action or prosecution against about 1,100 government employees.

In a 30-page report submitted to the High Court, the ACB recommended prosecution/disciplinary proceedings by referring their cases to the commissioner of inquiries or departmental action depending on the severity of their crime and involvement.
