Medak Central Prison’s 40-acre Nursery is a Veritable Heaven for Nature Lovers

SANGAREDDY: The Medak central prison at Kandhi village in Sangareddy mandal is recently attracting quite a numer of visitors with its greenery, trees and a beautiful nursery of colourful saplings which is spread over in a lush green 40 acres of open land.

The jail was constructed in 2011 at a cost of `11 crores. The barracks can accommodate 220 male prisoners and 20 female prisoners. Prisoners who are convicted for a two-year term are kept in this jail. The names of the barracks are Manjeera, Godhavari, Krishna and the female barrack is called Saraswathi. 

Inside the jail premises there is a beautiful garden where the prisoners use to grow different kinds of vegetables and the jail officials are utilising those to make curries and other dishes regularly.

In 40 acres of open land inside the jail, one can see various saplings of 2,500 teak plants, 1,000 mango saplings and 2,500 saplings of different flowers. The jail even has five different types of mango trees. Besides pomegranate, guava and papaya saplings, floras like jasmine, lavender and others add ethereal beauty to the jail environment.

Three years down the line, jail officials are expecting to earn `10 lakh per annum from these plants. Jail superintendent Nageshwar Reddy informed that whatever amount we generate from those trees would be used for the welfare of the prisoners. For the sake of gardening and cultivation a tractor was also sanctioned by the jail authority. At present there are two borewells on the jail premises, another five would be coming up soon as `7 lakh was sanctioned for this, the jailer said.

“Apart from gardening, we are also planning to impart computer training to the prisoners. In the long run, this will help them in eking out their own livelihood,” Nageshwar Reddy said.
