HYDERABAD: Cherlapally Corporator and TRS youth president Bonthu Ram Mohan and Borabanda Corporator and TRS minority leader Baba Fasiuddin have been unanimously elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
After the inception of GHMC in April 2007, Ram Mohan becomes the third of GHMC, Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy (2009-12), Majid Hussain (2012-14) were the previous Mayors while Fasiuddin will be third Deputy Mayor after Jaffer Hussain (2009-12) and G.Raj Kumar (2012-14) as Congress and MIM had shared power in previous body.
However, they will be the first Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Greater Hyderabad in the new state of Telangana.
The two corporators were elected unopposed during the first meeting of newly elected GHMC. With a huge majority of 130 in 217 member body including 67 ex-officio members, TRS bagged both the post mayor and deputy mayor posts. The entire was completed in a span of less than 25 minutes.
The council recevied nomination for Mayor post. The candidature of Ram Mohan was proposed by Venkateshwara Colony, Corporator Kavitha Reddy Manne (TRS) and seconded by Meerpet HB Colony, Corporator Golluri Anjaiah (TRS).
As no other nominations were received for the post, Presiding Officer and Hyderabad District Collector, Rahul Bojja announced Ram Mohan as Mayor unopposed.
While for Deputy Mayor post, Council received one nomination. The candidature of Fasiuddin was proposed by Ameerpet Corporator, N Sheshukumari (TRS) and seconded by Ramnagar Corporator, V Srinivas Reddy (TRS). As no other nominations were received for the post, Rahul Bojja announced Fasuddin as Deputy Mayor unopposed.
Of the 217 members, all the 150 corporators and 44 out of 67 ex officio members attended the special meeting. All the 150 corporators were given sworn in four different languages (Telugu, English, Hindi and Urdu) to suit the needs of the corporators.
Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), which emerged as the second largest party, extended its support to the unanimous elections.
RAW DEAL FOR WOMEN : Though 50 percent of the seats have been reserved for women but the ruling TRS government failed to accomodate women candidate either for Mayor or Deputy Mayor posts. In the State Cabinet too, there is no women minister.
TRS scored a landslide victory in GHMC elections by winning 99 wards. It had no presence in the previous council, whose term ended in December 2014.
Ram Mohan known as a strong loyalist of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, he had actively participated in the Telangana movement since last one decade and several cases were booked against him during the movement and was in jail for few months While Fasiuddin, president of TRS' student wing, Hyderabad had actively participated in the Telangana movement and was arrested on many occasions.
After the elections, all the TRS corporators went to Telangana Martyrs Memorial at Gun Park and offered floral tributes to the Telangana martyrs. They later proceeded to CM's Camp House and met Chief Minister and other ministers.
