HYDERABAD: A mother and her newborn child had a miraculous escape when a ceiling fan came crashing down at the Government Maternity Hospital at Sultan Bazar here on Saturday night.
P Mamatha and her 4-day-old infant had a lucky escape while the fan fell directly on Mamatha’s mother Anasuya who was attending to her, and a wing of the fan hit Mamatha.

Anasuya did not receive any visible injuries nor did she bleed but she started vomiting around 3.30 a.m which lasted till 5 am. She and her family members feared that she might have developed a clot in the brain because of which she vomited.

The incident took place in the post-operative green unit of the hospital. The fan has not been being used since Friday as it was revolving unsteadily and made noise when switched on. Though it was switched off, it came tumbling down on the elderly woman.  After the mishap, it was kept aside in the same room till Sunday evening.

The staff told the patients that in spite of several complaints to the hospital authorities a month ago that the fan was not working and needed a repair, nothing has been done. The hospital authorities were not available for comment.
