HYDERABAD: Residents of Rahmath Nagar are keeping their fingers crossed these days: the reason, an unfenced open Nala in their midst after the demolition of a culvert bridge by the Greater Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (GHMC) in May.

Connecting the main road of Moti Nagar and Rajiv Nagar, the open Nala culvert bridge has put the residents under a fix as many are now forced to take a 2 km detour for an otherwise 500-meter drive.

Residents allege that slipping while crossing over on the top of the nala has become a common thing now. People have also fallen in the nala on several occasion. Residents claimed that several representations made to the civic body, the local corporator and even the Khairatabad MLA have fallen on deaf ears as the issue persists for past several months. M Narendra, resident of Rahmath Nagar, said that the works are going on for the past two months. “The sewage from surrounding colonies directly mixes into the open nala. We cannot even stand or come out of the house in the evenings due to the stench,” he said. “When it rains, the nala flows onto the street and the roads look like a river,” he added.

When contacted, corporator of the Yousufguda ward Kilari Manohar blamed the electricity department in the delay. “We need to remove the electrical power supply cables from the open nala,” he claimed, while assuring that the work would be completed in 90 days once this is done. Meanwhile, the GHMC officials claimed that they have paid `10 lakh to the electricity department to remove the power cables and electrical poles into the open nala.
