HYDERABAD: National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) has developed solar-powered hybrid dehydrators which will produce good quality dry fish under hygienic conditions. The technology will also help pack and seal fish in pouches that will fetch better price, while assuring a low rejection percentage. 

The Institute also plans to train 4,000 fishermen and fisherwomen across the country over the next few months in adopting modern technologies to improve catch and reduce wastage in collaboration with National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB).

Speaking about the significance of this initiative, I Rani Kumudini, Chief Executive, NFDB said, “This technology after being implemented across India, will increase productivity among fishermen and fisherwomen. Recognising the need to separate bone from fish, NIRDPR’s rural technology park (RTP) has developed a fish bone separator. In view of the demand for high quantity fish bone separator, the same is being developed.”

User-friendly gizmos such as solar hybrid dehydrators, designed chilling chambers, and freezers have been designed using high quality materials enabling ease of operation and low maintenance. The leftover catch can be also be stored in chilled chambers to avoid spoilage.
