KOCHI: The Concepts of Feng shui were developed in China thousands of years ago.

Once people lived among mountains and rivers and now we have skyscrapers and roads. In the place of open fields, we now have parks and suburban landscapes.

Yet the guidelines and principles behind Feng shui are the same as they are based on logic and common sense and they don’t change. A Chinese landscape, with yang sky, yin land, dragon mountains and a white tiger lake is said to be the most ideal and conducive formation for good energy.

The important aspect of Feng shui is not just the décor or flow of chi (energy) but the way the home smells.

By checking the Feng shui of your home one can tell if everything is in harmony and if not make the changes to achieve balance. Many homes and large stores know very well the power of the sense of smell. No one can ignore the tempting aroma of freshly baked bread at the shopping mall no matter how far it is positioned within the store. Animals excrete pheromones to attract their mates and to demarcate their movement and territory.

Similarly our homes also have their own unique identity in terms of smell and it is not sur prising that even if you are blindfolded you can tell whose home you are entering.

The fragrance we feel when we f irst enter a home or office creates a very strong impact. If the home smells less than fresh, it can affect the comfort level of those who come inside.

The fragrance should be natural and should have a feel of serenity. Think of the subtle smell of lavender in a garden compared to the lavender scented air fresheners. Natural smells affect us in a way that commercially sold perfumes can never. Use aroma sticks with natural ingredients and herbs that are soothing. They cleanse the air do not cause any respiratory problems. Cleansing your home or office with aroma sticks regularly ensures that stale air is out and it brings in a sense of freshness. The Tibetan school of Feng shui considers this very important and essential for ‘space cleansing’. Growing plants which emanate good fragrance in the garden especially near the back door is good.

Some of the smell enhancers like aroma sticks, burning of aroma oils quite often referred to as aroma therapy, plants with flowers emanating good fragrance, fruits and fruit bowl on the dining table have in them a unique sense of smell which in Feng shui stimulates the sensory system of the occupants.

A space which has been cleansed, free of staleness and smells pleasant ushers in the positive chi and strengthens our aspirations and dreams by motivating us to move further in our lives.
