KOCHI: The Cusat has conferred honorary doctorates on three eminent personalities for the contributions to their respective fields.

Former Supreme Court Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan was conferred the honorary Doctorate of Law for his remarkable contribution to the legal and judicial system.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director E Sreedharan was conferred the honorary Doctorate of Science for his contribution in completing both the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro projects within the budgeted amount and much ahead of the schedule.

Kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair was conferred the honorary Doctorate of Letters in recognition to his achievements in spreading the Kerala art form Kathakali far beyond the borders.

Governor RS Gavai, who is also the Chancellor of the university, conferred the degrees on them.  Pro-Chancellor and Education Minister  MA Baby was present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice KG Balakrishnan emphasised the importance of the National Human Rights Commission and the vital role of education.

Gavai said the basic commonality of the three glorious personalities is that they are all from Kerala and yet have made remarkable contributions outside the state in their respective fields.

Baby said honouring the three illustrious sons of Kerala by awarding the doctorates would provide inspiration to the youth to emulate and perhaps excel them.

Meanwhile, Sreedharan said on the sidelines of the function that the Kochi Metro rail project was under consideration and the state government should allocate its share of the project cost to make it a reality.
