A perfect 10-10-10

A buzz is going around about the significance of October 10, 2010 due to the ‘unique’ coming together of numbers.

KOCHI: It might be the ease of remembering the date, if not the ‘luck’ believed to be associated with the coming Sunday, i.e., 10-10-10, that a buzz is going around about its significance. Nevertheless, October 10, 2010, is to go down in history as an interesting day.

While news is going around about the ‘unique’ coming together of numbers, many feel it is nothing but the psychology behind number 10 that is giving people the feel-good factor. For many use the number as a reference or limit, like ‘top ten’ lists.

While numerologists are predicting rosy days ahead, astrologists beg to differ. According to numerologist N Ravindran Nair, the day would usher in good days for democracies across the world, thanks to the course of Jupiter. “Government machineries will have better coordination, women will have more say in power and there will be a rise of educated youth from unexpected corners,” he says. The number one, which is there in the date, stands for Sun which always shines on us.

But professor A N Chettiar, a Thrissur-based astrologer, says, “The numbers in the date 10-10-2010 add up to five, which is indeed a positive thing. But Mercury, which rules the number, is being mal-affected.

It rules all forms of communication and intermediation and since it is going through a bad phase, in a few months our country will have to face threats from those countries on its south-western side. On the whole, there is a mix of merits and demerits.”

A greater significance has been associated with 10.10 am/pm on that particular day. One reason comes from the story of George Inmad, doing the rounds in the in-boxes, who was hearing impaired. But on 10/10/1910 at 10.10 pm he suddenly got cured of his hearing loss. It was a medical mystery and from then on it is believed that you will have good luck if you touch your ears at 10.10 am/pm!

Smart commercial establishments have already charted out plans to cash in on the day’s charm. In Kochi, Oxygen group is opening its new computer and IT park at Edappally on the day as part of its 10th anniversary. The time is 10.10 am and it will be opened by 10 personalities. Elsewhere, many organisations are taking advantage of the date by creating global events like the Global Work Party, World Homeless Day and the 10-10-10 Initiative to help create awareness for their cause. The Global Work Party calls for people to participate in an event that will help deal with global warming issues in their area. On the same day, Netherlands Antilles will be dissolved, with the islands being split up

and given a new constitutional status.

The mathematical uniqueness associated with it is that 10/10/10 or 101010 is divisible by the number of days in a week, which is considered to be very lucky.

But yin and yang (good and evil as per Chinese astrology) seem to be incorporated into this date as well, since 101010 is also divisible by six, which is considered unlucky. Whatever be the reasons, the date has caught the fancy of people all over the world.
