KOCHI: Golden Threads FC have reaffirmed their status as the leading football club in the city. The two-time defending champions were assured of a hat-trick of titles in the Cochin Premier League on Monday after contenders Central Excise bit the dust in the penultimate match of the competition at the Maharaja’s College Stadium.

Cochin Port Trust blanked the excisemen 3-0 to complete their engagements on a high, logging seven points. Sreemith opened the scoring just six minutes into the match while Saneesh (12th) and Benson (21st) completed the scoreline.

It meant that Golden Threads, having won all three matches so far, remain unchallenged at nine points.

Before the day’s fixture, Central Excise - with four points - were the only team who could have caught the leaders in the five-team championship. The two teams are slated to face each other in the season’s final match, rendered irrelevant  under the circumstances, later this week.
