KOCHI: Though there exists legal protection and reservation for women, the alarming rate of increase in the atrocities committed against women shows that the society is still steeped in the erosion of basic values, said Anoop Jacob, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies.

He was inaugurating a three-day workshop on policy implementation for gender equality, here on Tuesday.

The minister said that women should come forward in these parlous times, fighting against social evils and alcoholism.

The seminar was organised by  Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) Women’s Commission. K C Rosakutty, chairperson of KCBC Women’s Commission, who presided over the function said that the status of women in society has not altered much.

“Irrespective of her position in society, she is still considered as a second-grade citizen and has to fight for her rights,” she said.

Bishop Joseph Thomas, the president of KCBC, Kottayam District Collector Mini Antony, deputy secretary general of KCBC Stephen Alathara, director of  Kerala Social Service Forum Fr. Romans Antony and executive secretary of KCBC Annie Rodny, also spoke at the seminar.
