KOCHI: The Edappally-Muvattupuzha Road will soon be developed into a State Highway.

Procedures in this regard have been initiated, said Public Works Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju.

He was speaking after inaugurating the construction work of the Kangarappady Junction, which is part of the Edappally-Muvattupuzha Road.

The road, which is becoming the hub of commercial business, has not received the type of development it deserves till now.

According to the minister, the road will be widened by 250 metres in terms of length and 30 metres in terms of width.

Also, the development of the road will be taken up as per the model of a four-lane National Highway.

The minister added that `15.73 crore has been earmarked for the project, out of which `13.42 has already been transferred to the Revenue Department for completing the initial phase.

As part of this, a project has also been formulated to rehabilitate the shop owners and land owners who stand to lose because of the road widening works.

Those who have shops in the shopping complex in the vicinity will also be part of the rehabilitation process.

Kalamassery Municipal chairman Jamal Mannakkadan, Collector P I Sheik Pareeth, former MLA A M Yusuf, District Planning Committee member Advocate Abdul, Municipal vice-chairperson Advocate Anitha Latheef, Roads and Bridges Aluva Superintendent S Humayun were also present.
