The celestial voice of K J Yesudas is an integral part of all Malayalis' life. Honouring the legendary singer, the Kerala Cartoon Academy(KCA) has come up with an exhibition of 108 caricatures of Yesudas drawn by 108 cartoonists from all over India.
The exhibition, titled ‘Yesudas in White and Colour’ was inaugurated by the great singer himself at the Nanappa Art Gallery. The exhibition will be on till Sunday.
Most of the caricatures on display exhibit Yesudas wielding a ‘thamburu’ and singing. While almost all the cartoonists chose to portray the musical aspect of his personality, there were also some different ones.
One such caricature, drawn way back in 1972, by Yesudasan, features a then young Yesudas with a bucket of money in his hand! What prompted Yesudasan to draw this caricature was the initiative taken by Yesudas for collecting funds to help victims in Bangladesh War.
Kerala Cartoon Akademi president Prasannan Anikkad, secretary Sajeev, veteran cartoonists Yesudasan, Toms, artist Kaladharan of the Nanappa Art Gallery were present.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, Yesudas said that he considered all forms of art - be it drawing or singing - as gifts of God. He also shared the little known fact that he himself had dabbled in cartooning once, but said that the cartoon he drew was not of much merit.
Cartoonist Toms then presented Yesudas with a caricature of Boban and Molly, the iconic characters created by him. Cartoonist Yesudasan, on behalf of the Cartoon Akademi, gifted Yesudas with an album of all the caricatures.
