‘Pathamudayam’ celebrated

The Puthiyakavu Market here celebrated ‘Pathamudayam’ (tenth  sunrise after Vishu) on Tuesday.

Every year, on the tenth day of the Malayalam month of ‘Medam’, the residents here embark on a celebration exchanging agricultural products symbolising the ancient tradition of barter system.

 Agricultural produce like yam, tapioca, turmeric and ginger are kept for sale.  Besides, a variety of mangoes and jack fruits were kept for sale at the market which   witnessed a heavy rush on Tuesday. Traditional crafts and utensils like hand-woven umbrellas, baskets and trays were also put on sale as part of the celebrations. According to the tradition, ‘Pathamudayam’ is the day when the sun is most powerful and astrological science support the believe.

To symbolise the ten sunrises from Vishu, traditional oil lamps with 10 wicks are lit r every house.

It is also considered to be one of the most auspicious days of the year and is sought out to start new ventures.

Old timers say animal sacrificing ritual was held as part of the celebration near a pond at Puthiyakavu where now Government Ayurveda College Hospital situated.
