Cops set to ensure safe Onam

The Railway Protection Force has deputed additional staff to prevent untoward incidents

The Kerala Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force in a joint  operation have deployed extra personnel on duty to prevent untoward incidents  at railway stations and trains in the wake of heavy rush witnessed during Onam season.

As many as 20-armed Railway Police personnel have been positioned at  different locations around the Ernakulam Junction station alone. RPF squads, comprising six personnel each, have been deputed on trains which run across the state during day and night hours.More personnel, on platforms and trains, will deployed in mufti so as to ensure maximum security. Additional employess will be deputed near ticket counters too.

Alert Issued

A Railway police release has cautioned the travelling public to be more vigilant about their belongings. They are requested to use Railway Alert numbers 984620010 and RPF Helpline number 9995040000 in case of need.

Railway police Ernakulam CI P Vinod said  many attempted thefts were prevented during the past days. “No cases have been registered so far as nothing serious was reported. However, we are taking extra precaution,” he  added.

Strict action will be taken against those who attempt anti-social activities against women, baggage lifting, chain snatching in trains and platforms during the season.

Extra personnel will be withdrawn from duty on September 22.

Meanwhile, several Onam programmes by Railway Passengers Associations, Railway friends and Railway employees were held. Mavelis greeted passengers at the entrance of the Ernakulam Junction Station. Railway Manager Rajesh Agarwal joined the celebrations. 

All ticket counters, reservation counters and tatkal counters will be function as usual. On Monday, the counters will only be open till the afternoon, Railway officials said.

Extra coaches have been attached to trains to meet the extra rush. Special trains have also been added.
