Documentaries on Kathakali Maestros

Express News Service

KOCHI: Two documentaries on Kathakali Musicians will be screened at the Children’s Park theatre in Kochi on Friday. Chitharanjini, remembering the maestro, is a documentary on Kalamandalam Haridas made in 2012, in the seventh of year of the demise of the renowned Kathakali Musician. He was a musician who reinvented the ideal of a kathakali vocalist through his memorable voice and musical innovations. The nature of this 74 minute documentary is of oral history, however, it does not contain any voice over. The documentary is woven with the master’s music and words of the people who knew him personally, some as friends, some as disciples, and some as kathakali connoisseurs.

Docu on Kalamandalam Gangadharan

Asan, a documentary on Kalamandalam Gangadharan focuses on the musical life of the Kathakali music stalwart. He represents a unique style in kathakali music, though very high in musical values but so unfamiliar to the present day kathakali audience. Thus the 69 minute documentary carries a big responsibility of reintroducing the master to the future trends of kathakali music.

Both the documentaries were directed by Ratheesh and produced by G Sunil.

The screening will begin at 5.30 pm.
