KOCHI: Abhimanyu was killed for raising voice against communalism, said poet Balachandran Chullikad during a public meeting organised by the CPM district committee. “The communal forces want to breed on campus a generation that believes in killing and dying for religion,” he said.

“These fundamentalists know they won’t be able to gain a foothold on campuses where SFI has strong presence. Hence, they took the cowards’ route and murdered a student belonging to a poor family in Maharaja’s College, which is known as an SFI citadel. By killing Abhimanyu, these forces dashed the hopes and dreams of his parents. We shouldn’t let those dreams die with him,” said Chullikad. He called communalism the greatest evil faced by independent India.

“Independent India had adopted a secular and democratic Constitution. However since then, RSS and Sangh Parivar have been trying to turn this great country into a Hindu nation. The ruling Modi Government is a part of the activities of these organisations,” he said.

Chullikad said some religious fundamentalists are trying to convert India into an Islamic state. “Both these people have a common enemy and that is the Indian Constitution that upholds a secular, democratic and socialist outlook.
