KOCHI: As the water level in the Idukki dam inches closer to its full storage capacity, KSEB has started preparations to release water from the reservoir.
A meeting of the board of directors on Wednesday discussed the steps to be taken to meet the eventuality. Board director NS Pillai briefed Power Minister M M Mani about the situation and the government authorised the KSEB to take all precautionary measures.
“The water level in the reservoir touched 2,388 ft on Wednesday, against the maximum level of 2,403 ft,” Pillai told Express.
“We will issue the first flood alert when the water level touches 2,390 ft. All the government agencies and the Disaster Management Authority will be apprised of the situation.
The second flood alert will be sounded when the water level touches the 2,395-ft mark. At this juncture, we will inform the Revenue Department and local bodies about the intensity of water release and which areas will be affected.
