MUMBAI: Although Gokhale ROB falls under the administration of the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC), the civic body is not responsible for the upkeep of the bridge and pays the Railway for the job, said Mumbai mayor, Vishvanath Mahdeshwar.

Washing his hands off the collapse, the Mayor held the Railway accountable for not keeping a check on the condition of the bridge.

The Mayor also implicated that no lesson have been learnt from Elphinstone road tragedy last year.

Congress leader and President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee Sanjay Nirupam also passed the bucks on the railways saying that Indian Railway has failed to learn from previous incidents.

Sanjay Nirupam has taken a potshot at Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal after a Foot-over-Bridge (FOB) collapsed in Mumbai's Andheri halting the train services in the city and bringing it to a halt.

The Mumbai Congress, meanwhile, has urged volunteers in and around Andheri to help authorities.

Amidst the blame game over the incident, local MLA Ameet Satam (BJP) said instead of playing politics, the authorities must focus on resuming train services and health of the injured.

After the Elphinstone road stampede, the railway has audited all bridges and declared them safe.

Nationalist Congress party leader Nawab Malik has accused the railway of false claim and has demanded an inquiry in the matter.
