THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET) has completed seventy years of academic glory.

Education Minister M.A. Baby would inaugurate the celebrations at a function to be held on the college campus at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Seventy years ago, on July 3, 1939, the College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET) formally came into existence. The institution was originally located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city in the former office and bungalow of the Chief Engineer. The building currently houses the office of the Post Master General (PMG). The Planetarium and the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum are also located there.

Major Mathewman was appointed as the first principal of the college with Vasthuvidya Kusala Sri Balakrishna Rao, retired Water Works engineer to the government, and Prof D.L. Deshpande on the faculty.

The college took shape with a small batch of 21 students each for the Degree and Diploma courses, under the then Travancore University.

The institution was shifted to the present sprawling campus spread over 125 acres at Kulathoor, near Sreekariyam, in 1961. From the humble beginnings, the institution has grown to one of national importance with eight full-fledged departments, more than 100 laboratories and a state-of-the-art Central Workshop.

The institution has grown and expanded steadily, so much so that today it is not only the largest engineering college in Kerala, but also one of the biggest in the country. The institution runs eight undergraduate programmes in BTech (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, Applied Electronics and Instrumentation, Architecture and Industrial Engineering) and 19 postgraduate programmes, including MCA and MBA. The institution also conducts evening courses in BTech, MTech and MBA for working professionals. It is the institution with maximum number of courses accredited to the National Board of Accreditation of AICTE in the country.

All the undergraduate courses and all eligible postgraduate courses offered by the institution are accredited. The CET is also extending its facilities to national-level institutions such as IIST, IISER and sister institutions for conducting their programmes. The proposed Centre for Engineering Research and Development being established by the Government will also be housed in the institution.
