THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister of State for External Affairs and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor has called upon the legal community to avoid the path of confrontation, to drop agitational measures like court boycott, and said that it was consensus that was the need of the hour.

“A confrontationist approach, like the court boycott, is not appropriate. Also, such measures create further hurdles in the path of setting up an HC bench,’’ Tharoor said at a reception organised for MPs by the Bar Association here on Wednesday.

Tharoor said that he had already begun efforts to set up a High Court Bench in the capital and that he was in talks with the concerned people.

“Being your representative, I am with you in your efforts to bring an HC Bench to the capital. But, the lawyers should adopt peaceful and tolerant methods to achieve this end,’’ the Union Minister said. “Just give me some time. Since this is not an issue where I can take a decision on my own, I need time to convince the concerned people and make them take a favourable decision,’’ he said, and added: “Hope you will give me a breathing space.’’

Attingal MP A. Sampath and Kollam MP N. Peethambara Kurup were also present during the occasion. Kerala High Court retired Chief Justice K.P. Balachandran was the chief guest.

Sampath said that he had raised the High Court Bench issue during the first session of the Parliament itself. He said he would work in tandem with Shashi Tharoor to expedite the process.
