THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two persons were held by the city police on charges of cheating in the name of a fake cancer society.
Kanthappan alias Jayaprakash and Jayaprasad, both natives of Tamil Nadu, were those arrested.
Police sources said that the duo had collected big amounts from school students in the name of Cancer Care Society of India, a fake organisation. A recruitment advertisement was given in leading newspapers recently and four girls were appointed. They later approached schools and collected donations with the help of students. The girls also accompanied the duo to schools. The cheating came to light after authorities of a school in Kollam became suspicious of the genuineness of the society and reported the matter to the police. The police raided the office of the society at Kaimanam and recovered several documents.
