KUNNAMKULAM: Kunnamkulam, one of the oldest trade centres in the state, is always known for its natives' ability to make their dreams a reality. For the past three years, they are on such a mission to revive Onathallu, a friendly folkstyle wrestling conducted during the Onam celebrations.

Also known as Kayyankali, Onathallu lost its popularity in Kunnamkulam some 25 years back. The reasons were numerous, starting from money to the lack of interest towards the game.

"But, that is past. Since the last three years, people have started loving Onathallu again. Now, many clubs like the Popular Arts and Sports Centre have come forward to save this traditional mock fight from extinction.

Of course, a huge amount of money has to be spent for it. But, we are able to manage it somehow," says a delighted, rather determined Mathews, popularly known as Mathews Master, one of the senior organisers of Onathallu in Kunnamkulam.

He says, Kunnamkulam was once known for the masters of the art. People like Kadambur Kunjiraman Nair, Vettikkattiri Mammi, Varavur Syed Ali and Edathara Velayudhan are some of the names the natives are proud of. "We are sure, those days would come back. Today, even high school students are participating in the event which shows that the future of the art is safe, provided the muchneeded support is given from seniors as well as the authorities.

Though a traditional art with a legacy ranging to hundreds of years, Onathallu is still neglected by the Government and the Tourism Department.

"Ever since we restarted the event, people from across the state come to Kunnamkulam to participate or witness the event. If the authorities provide funds to organise Onathallu, like they do for pulikali, kummattikkali and other Onam games, this art could definitely be preserved," he points out.

This year, Onathallu would be held at the Jawahar Stadium in Kunnamkulam at 2.30 p.m. on August 24.

At least 40 teams, consisting of various age groups from across the state, will participate in the event with a single thought in mind to floor the opponent and take home the trophy and the prize money!
