THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Over the years, the Martyrs’ Column at Palayam has witnessed many a demonstration and has been the rallying point for marches and sundry events. But on Wednesday evening, it witnessed a touching moment as a teacher offered ardent prayers for the speedy recovery of his hospitalised student.

The teacher was writer Dr George Onakkoor and the patient, actor Jagathy Sreekumar, who has been admitted to the MIMS Hospital in Kozhikode following a motor accident.

Onakkoor, who inaugurated the ‘mass prayer’ organised by the ‘Sathyanweshana Charitable Society’, of which Jagathy is patron, recalled how his student had displayed his ‘’brilliant acting skills’’ even as a student at Mar Ivanios College in the city.

‘’What happened in Kozhikode was truly painfull. Sreekumar is an actor who should be compared to those in world cinema. We pray for his quick recovery and return to acting,’’ Onakkoor said.

The Sathyanweshana Charitable Society was founded in 2006, and it has always had the enthusiastic support of Jagathy, society joint secretary Rajasekharan Nair said.

‘’Whenever he is in town, he makes it a point to attend our programmes. He had also donated an ambulance to the society to commemorate his father Jagathy N K Achary,’’ Rajasekharan Nair said.
