The regions coming under the Attukal Township Project will be developed by dividing them into three zones. The core area comprising 100 acres, contiguous to the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, will have a special development plan, according to a preliminary report approved on Tuesday.
A detailed project report will be prepared for developing the township in four months’ time, it was decided at a review meeting held at the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA).
The meeting, convened by Health and Devaswom Minister V S Sivakumar, approved the preliminary report for the implementation of the project and passed it on to the technical committee for detailed scrutiny.
Among the top priorities of the township project are initiatives to free the temple premises and their immediate neighbourhood from traffic snarls and provide sufficient parking space. Separate plans will be formulated for sectors which require special attention. They include the development of the big and small roads, power supply and maintenance of law and order.
Also on the priority list are security arrangements at the high-profile temple, which draws lakhs of women every year for the Pongala festival; public health; and maintaining a clean environment.
‘’The detailed project will be prepared in four months’ time. The meeting has approved the preliminary report,’’ Sivakumar said. The meeting also decided to make changes in the traffic arrangements for transporting devotees to the Attukal Temple during the annual Pongala festival.
V Sivankutty MLA, Mayor K Chandrika, TRIDA chairman P K Venugopal and Temple Trust secretary Jyothish Kumar were present.
