Transport Commissioner Rishi Raj Singh has asked all Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) in the state to submit a compliance report on the instructions issued earlier for proper maintenance of vehicles carrying schoolchildren.
He said that in the recent past there were lot of incidents where vehicles carrying schoolchildren met with accidents. To avoid this, all RTOs have been asked to comply with all the instructions issued earlier about proper maintenance of these vehicles.
A compliance report has to be submitted by the RTOs by June 30 whether the school buses/other vehicles carrying children are fulfilling the instructions.
There was a serious accident near Koylandi in Kozhikode district on Wednesday in which four persons belonging to one family perished. A private bus while overtaking a lorry collided head on with an incoming car in which the family was travelling.
The RTO concerned has been asked to suspend the permit of the bus as well as the driver’s licence permanently.
To avoid this kind of incidents in future all the RTOs have been given strict instructions to conduct checking by interceptors.
The Transport Commissioner would visit the accident spot on Friday to understand the gravity of the situation and to find out what more effective actions could be taken by the Motor Vehicles Department.
After a meeting with Thiruvananthapuram Collector, the DTPC ground near Shanghumugham was allotted to conduct driving test. The present spot was congested and the new place will be used from June 17.
From June 17, the Deputy Transport Commissioner’s office, Southern Zone, situated at the Transport Commissionerate here will be shifted to the Civil Station, Kudappanakunnu.
The Collector had already allotted a suitable place for the office at the civil station.
“This will provide a lot of space-related problems in the Transport Commissionerate and we will be able to accommodate all officers who have recently joined at the Commissionerate,”
