Workshop on Advanced Android Programming on

A five-day workshop on ‘Advanced Android Programming’ has commenced at IIITM-K in Technopark.

The workshop is jointly organised by IIITM-K, the International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS) and IEEE Computer Society, with support from the Department of Information Technology, Government of India.

Over 60 participants, comprising students, fresh graduates, faculty and industry professionals, are attending the workshop.

Dr Rajasree M S, Director, IIITM-K, noted that being the fastest-growing platform for Smart Devices in the world, Android has taken Open Source right down to grassroots. ‘’It is important for the programming community, including students, to leverage the power of this platform,’’ she said.

‘’Android, given its Open Source nature, enables even individual programmers operating from their own homes to programme Apps that may be of  business or social value. All it takes is building the right competencies, which is the primary objective of this workshop,’’ said Satish Babu, Director, ICFOSS.

‘’More FOSS-based smart-device platforms are scheduled to emerge later in the year, such as Ubuntu for Phones and Tizen, leading to even more developments in the Open Source space,’’ he added.

R Srinivasan, Chair, IEEE Kerala Section, who also spoke on the occasion, called for developing applications of social interest. K Pradeep Kumar of IIITM-K and Saurabh Banga of CDAC New Delhi also spoke.

The lead trainer and resource person for the workshop is Saurabh Banga, Technical Officer, CDAC, New Delhi.
