A slew of projects including the digitalisation of Malayalam language are on the cards of the Malayalam University which will complete one year on Nov 1. Malayalam University VC K Jayakumar told mediapersons here on Tuesday that the university has been thinking of ways on implementing digitisation of the language.
‘’A Malayalam digital library is being planned. Books which have copyright and those without it would be collected for this,’’ he said. Four projects would be taken up on Jan 1. Among the projects are on those who have studied Malayalam literature and culture around the globe. The second project is preservation of diversity of the language by documenting various slang spoken in various regions. The third project is preservation of the publications of yesteryears, manuscripts and books. The fourth project is documentation of classes of eminent teachers and talks of noted writers to make them available for coming generations. A study would be conducted to make the society know about the drawbacks of the children not studying the mother tongue. An online course will be started on April 1 for non-resident Keralites to study Malayalam language. Four diploma courses - television script writing and presentation, new media studies, script writing , video film making and advertising - will be started on Nov 21. Jayakumar said the University had sought for `8 crore from the govt.
A two-day national seminar will be organised on the occasion of first anniversary of Malayalam University here on Thursday and Friday on the topic of ‘Rereading and new reading of Malayalam language, Kerala culture and Malayalam literature’. Minister P K Abdu Rabb will inaugurate the seminar on Thursday at Kanakakkunnu at 10 a m.
