If you wish to perfect the sweetness and elegance of your home, then the latest fad in interior designing is adorning the walls of your rooms with decorative wall mirrors! Sounds a bit baffling? But that’s what they say.
As a substitute to wall pictures or other decors, a mirror is more preferred according to some interior designers, mirror mart owners and definitely a bunch of individuals who have upheld this trend in their homes.
And, moreover, these wall decors come in breathtaking designs and styles.
Gone are the days when squared, rectangular and oval mirrors used to hang on your walls. Today, even the rates of such glass products have gone up to more than ten thousands.
‘’Clients usually prefer antique, wooden and acrylic-framed mirrors to decorate their homes. Though some cities in North India sell these products, usually they are imported from Malaysia, Indonesia and China,’’ says Shamsheer, who owns Homz and Roomz Décor in Kozhikode.
Large blocks of mirrors occupy a major wall portion of living and dining rooms these days, unlike the good old times when mirrors were used only for personal grooming. Available in all types, including traditional, modern, vintage, etc, you will discover them in all shapes and sizes suitable for your home interiors.
‘’Most of our clients order a full-length wall mirror to adorn their central living space. They opine that it adds to the richness, unlike a wall painting or a family photograph. Beautifully carved in wood, the price of these mirrors goes up to ` 40,000. Many people love to use decorative mirrors as they add to the depth, making the place look extra spacious permiting you to have a glimpse of yourself,’’ says Shamsheer.
“The demand for the product has peaked in the recent past. I guess it is because of the latest innovations from the newfangled interior designers,’’ he says.
Interior designers do have a word to say about why they give special prominence to wall mirrors. “Such mirrors are opted to bring an infinite feel to a small room.
They enhance illumination too. Coming in various attractive shapes, sizes and carvings, they have almost become a fad among clients. And you get a ‘rich’ feeling when you have an ornamented mirror on your walls,” says Deepak, an interior designer with Prashanth Associates in Kozhikode.
Says Karthik Krishnan, a businessman: ‘’When I was planning the interiors of my newly-built home, I consulted my designers regarding the provision of hanging a mirror in our living space and we purchased an ornamental piece from Delhi,’’ he says.
But, according to other experts, it is improper to just follow the trend without seeing if it is really needed or not.
‘’Each furniture in a room should match the interior structure of a room even if it’s a mirror. Hanging a mirror just for the sake of it would only tarnish the beauty of the room. Usually they are hung in small rooms. But, unfortunately, many of them just hang a mirror even in a large room,’’ says an interior designer from N M Salim and Associates.
People go for mirrors are placed from an astrological point of view. ‘’Feng Shui says that proper placement of a mirror is believed to regulate the energy flow in a room,’’ says a Feng Shui expert.
There are some dos and dont’s when it comes to mirror preservation. As Sunil Kumar, an exponent from National Mirror Mart, says, ‘’It is not at all advisable to wash a mirror. People presume that washing it makes it more clean. But it produces only adverse effects, including dark dots.’’
