Master Plan Confusion

Express News Service

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A master plan is something the city can look forward to while on the threshold of another new year. Much expectations laid on the draft master plan for 2031 literally turned a damp squib with the government withdrawing it and deciding to formulate a new one in early 2014, but no news has been heard since then.

The last time the city has got a development plan was in 1971. Nothing much has been done ever since, even though the index of progress of the capital has been on an upward spiral over the past few years.

Residents of Kattayikonam and Chanthavila were up in arms against the plan when the places received the tag of ‘Proposed Institutional Area’. Their agitation shifted location to Secretariat, following which the government announced that it would amend the draft and prepare a new one. Meanwhile, the City Corporation came up with a claim that it will prepare a plan on its own, but this did not materialise.
