The application to start the course has reached the University after a delay. The course will most probably be started next year

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Only one more step remains to realise the long-pending dream of the College of Fine Arts here to commence Master of Fine Arts (MFA) course in one more discipline.

The application of the College to start MFA in Painting has finally reached the University of Kerala after much delay.

The College is now waiting for the affiliation and is hopeful of commencing the course next academic year.

Though the college got sanction to start MFA in Painting in 2011, the further steps at the Department of Technical Education and the University took time. It was the Department of Technical Education which had to process the application. “The processing has been done now and we submitted the application to the University. There is little  chance for some objection from the part of the University and we are hopeful of commencing MFA in Painting next year,”  said A S Sajith, principal, College of Fine Arts.

The college at present has MFA course only in Sculpture, forcing scores of students to leave the state to continue studies as the number of opportunities for higher studies is less in the state. Raja Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts, Mavelikkara, and College of Fine Arts, Thrissur, the other two institutes for Fine Arts in the state, have no MFA courses.  RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura, is the only institute in the state with MFA in more than one subject, leaving the students with few options for higher studies. It is hard for most of the BFA students passing out from the institutions in the state to join MFA as it is difficult to make it to the final list of the Tripunithura college.

The College of Fine Arts here is also planning to submit application for Arts History course next year along with that for BFA and MFA in New Media. “We are confident regarding the affiliation for Painting and will be submitting applications for the other courses next year,” said Sajith.
