Floodlights Switched on at University Stadium

Installed on four masts carrying 51 metal-halide lamps each, the stadium thus becomes the first stadium in the district to be installed with floodlights.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University Stadium in the city bathed in light on Wednesday evening as Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan switched on the floodlights erected there ahead of the 35th National Games.

Installed on four masts carrying 51 metal-halide lamps each, the stadium thus becomes the first stadium in the district to be installed with floodlights. It will provide a lighting between 750 and 1,000 lux.

Speaking on the occasion, Thiruvanchoor said that the works leading to the National Games was progressing as scheduled and the Indian Olympic Association had expressed satisfaction regarding the organisation thus far. US-based General Electric is the contractor for lighting up the stadium at a cost of Rs 4.76 crore. The stadium is set to host athletics competitions in the National Games which will be held from January 31 to February 14.

The Trivandrum International Stadium at Kariavattom near here will become the second stadium in the city with floodlights once the construction is completed.
