THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A day after two members of a family drowned in the Akkulam lake after jumping off the Akkulam bridge in a suspected suicide pact, the body of one more member of the family was found near the railway track at Pettah here on Monday morning. The deceased has been identified as Sajina, 28, younger sister of Jasmine, who had drowned in the lake the other day along with her three-year-old child, Fathima.

The body of Sajina was found on the railway track near Arappuravilakam Temple at Pettah. The Pettah police registered a case in connection with the incident. According to the police, Sajina might have committed suicide after being  heartbroken over the news reports of her sister’s death. The body was found around 7 am on Monday after Sajina reached at her residence from Bengaluru on Sunday night.

She had taken her scooter from her residence at Kilimanoor and gone to Pettah railway station. Apparently, she ran towards the railway track after parking the vehicle and jumped in front of a moving train. The body of Sajina was found by the local people and they informed the police. The body has been handed over to the relatives after an autopsy, police said.

Meanwhile, the health condition of Shofitha, 55, mother of Jasmine and Sajina, is said to be stable and she has been shifted to the ward.

Three members of the family had jumped into the lake from the Akkulam bridge, leading to the death of three-year-old Fathima and her mother Jasmine, 30. Shofitha, the grandmother of Fathima, was rescued by the Fire and Rescue Services team and admitted to the Medical College Hospital. The incident occurred around 7.10 pm when  five members of a family, including three kids,  from Kilimanoor, arrived at the spot in a car with registration number KL 16 F 6868.

However, two young boys, aged 11 and 9, were reportedly prevented from jumping off the bridge by passing motorists.

The family hails from Puthiyakavu near Kilimanoor. Jasmine was the wife of Rahim, who is currently employed in Qatar. The police also said that the reason for the suicide bid was  financial crisis.
