THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thycaud, is getting elevated to international status under a three-phased project titled ‘Model School 21 C, a Model for All, Forever’.
The first phase is to begin in February and conclude by September. It envisages improving the teaching-learning standards to international levels. The second phase, touted to be the most decisive part, will be implemented over the next 30 months, where bringing international standards to education support and basic infrastructure is to be the focal area. The third phase aims at ensuring sustainable upkeep in the future.
The project will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday at 3 pm.
In phase one, the school alumni is taking up the entire expenses. Renovation of the science lab and setting up of English and Mathematics labs are some of the activities to be carried out. It also incorporates meeting the educational expenses of students below poverty line, upgrading 47 classes to smart classrooms, offering food and arranging medical check-up for students.
The second phase expects an expenditure of Rs 25 crore, of which a plum share of Rs 20 crore is promised by the alumni, while the rest is expected from the government.
A sum of Rs 1.82 crore is set aside for the renovation of smart-class, laboratory and library. Toilet renovation is expected to be done with Rs 3 lakh. As many as 78 teachers will get iPads. When the project is completed, the entire school will have over 220 computers running on licenced software.
Students would be getting a chance to interact with internationally-acclaimed educationists, sharpen their entrepreneurial skills and get introduced to the application of modern technologies. The project gives thrust to improve the arts and sports abilities also.
The school’s management will be decided based on guidelines to be chalked out by the government, City Corporation, teachers’ organisation and alumni when the project is implemented. The project is coordinated by alumnus K C Chandrahasan.
The inaugural function will be presided over by Health Minister V S Sivakumar.
Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty, Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb, Mayor K Chandrika, alumni members technocrat Kris Gopalakrishnan, actor Mohanlal, Chief Secretary E K Bharat Bhushan and Additional Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson will attend.
