THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : A new organisation ‘P K Rosy Smaraka Samithi’, in memory of P K Rosy, the first heroine of Malayalam cinema who was introduced through the silent movie ‘Vigathakumaran’, will be launched on Tuesday.
The samithi will formally be inaugurated on Tuesday by Cinema Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan at Press Club here. An award instituted by the samithi will be presented to actor Chandini Geetha, who enacted the role of Rosy in the film ‘Celluloid’ directed by Kamal.
During Tuesday’s function, journalists Kovalam Satheeshkumar and Bharathannoor Shameer, novelist Vinu Abraham and documentary filmmaker Kiran Raveendran, who all brought Rosy’s life through their respective medium will be honoured by K Muraleedharan MLA.
P K Rajamma became P K Rosy to enter world of films. The film ‘Vigathakumaran which was screened in the Capitol theatre here on November 7, 1928, resulted in widespread unrest in the capital due to protest against Rosy acting in the movie. That night, her dwelling at Melarannoor was set on fire by protestors. She and other family members had to flee from the place to save their lives. Rosy escaped in a truck which came her way while she was fleeing and which was driven by Kesava Pillai, a Nagercoil native, who later married her.
Rosy, who lost every link to her family, lived in the Ottupura street in Nagercoil for more than five decades in the name of Rajammal.
