Thiruvananthapuram Tops in Joblessness

Of the total 37.15 lakh unemployed persons in the state, T’Puram accounts for 5.45 lakh

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Capital Thiruvananthapuram has the highest number of unemployed persons going by the number of registrations at employment exchanges, the Assembly was told on Monday.

Of the total 37.15 lakh unemployed persons in the state, Thiruvananthapuram accounts for 5.45 lakh. Of this, 3.33 lakh are women and 2.12 lakh are men, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John informed the Assembly in a written reply. And of the total unemployed in the state, 22.59 lakh are women and 14.56 lakh are men.

Kollam is second in the list with 3.86 lakh unemployed and Kozhikode is next with 3.66 lakh. Malappuram has 3.29 lakh unemployed persons, while Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur have 3.17 lakh, 3.01 lakh and 3.13 lakh respectively. Kasargod and Wayanad have the lowest number of unemployed with 92,960 and 87,495 persons each, Shibu Baby John said.

After the UDF government came to power in 2011, 38,896 persons were given jobs, he said in reply to a related question on unemployment. In 2012-13, the state government spent Rs 33.10 crore on unemployment wages and Rs 15.73 crore for six months in 2013-14. During the first ten months of the current fiscal year, the government spent Rs 26.57 crore for the purpose.

NICE to be Set up in Capital

T’Puram: The Nursing Institute for Career Enhancement (NICE) will be established in Thiruvananthapuram to enhance the job prospects of nurses in India and abroad, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John informed the Assembly on Monday.

NICE will be set up under the Kerala Academy for Skills with the help of experienced hands in the private sector and it will be operated by SUT-NMC Healthcare, UAE, he said in a written reply to a question. NICE will offer courses on skill enhancement, communication skills, computer awareness and the English language.

Other major areas of focus will be identification of job opportunities in India and abroad and solving problems that may arise in job placements. The Advanced Nursing Excellence Programme under NICE will offer skill enhancement opportunities for degree and diploma holders, he said.
