THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The households in the Manjadi region near Peyad here will enjoy the benefits of high voltage power distribution system (HVDS) from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) after the electricity distribution through the state-of-the-art technology was launched the other day.

KSEB Distribution and Safety director M Muhammed Ali and Renewable Energy and Planning Department director K Valsalakumari jointly inaugurated the system on Sunday which the KSEB said is far superior than the low voltage distribution system previously in use in the region falling under the Peyad electrical section.

The HVDS is the power distribution system that is used in several developed countries across the globe, KSEB said. Under this system, step down transformers are installed on the 11KV lines to supply electricity to the nearby customers.

This relatively new technology was being used at the Manjadi region for an year on experimental basis. After the testing proved successful, the KSEB said it replaced three low tension feeders on the 160KVA transformers with 24 15KVA transformers on high tension lines to upgrade the power distribution system.

The HVDS will also negate the 8-10 per cent loss of electricity when it is transferred through low tension wires over long distances, the KSEB said, adding that such loss can be reduced to around one per cent with use of HVDS. KSEB also said that HVDS lines will also prevent theft of electricity as well as reduce chances of electricity lines snapping.
