THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If things pan out as expected the Aluminium Industries Ltd (ALIND) at Kundara in Kollam district, which has been lying shut for over two decades, will roll up shutters soon.
Steps are on to reopen the factory within a month, representatives of the company informed a meeting convened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here on Monday. The company has been lying shut since 1997.
As per the decision, the government has assured to renew the lease agreement for 33 of the 62 acres of land in the company’s possession. Any problems in getting work orders from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will be addressed. However, orders can be placed only through tenders, the Chief Minister told the management. He also issued instructions to renew the factory’s licence.
The company representatives informed the meeting eighty per cent of the repairs on the factory equipment was over. The company, established in 1946, used to manufacture equipment for the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Indian Railway. Production can be restarted if work orders from these institutions can be obtained, the management representatives told the government.
